Absent proof of ET, it is a fair bet they blew themselves up; at least some of them. Re-read the story in Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath of the tortoise crossing the highway. The tortoise is cautious, but progressive. Still, its adventurous nature gets it hit by a truck. It flips and spins and lands off the highway. When it 'reboots,' does it give up, and stay in one safe place? No, because there is no safe place forever. Diversity of everything is essential to survival, including diversity of location.
